Blood Axe
Don felt relieved that Albert had at last found him, yet he was wildly upset at taking six armed and angry soldiers along for the ride.
“I got a bad shock for you, New York,” he said loud enough to be heard.
“Stop calling me New York,” growled the leader of the group. “An’ it’s you that’s gonna get the shock. If it was up to me I’d take you out and shoot you right now.”
“What’s through that door,” Don said, “is not what you expect.”
“Shut it, bud,” Sergeant Borden shouted.
New York barked, “I want three armed men left in here at all times, the rest of you out. First light we’ll get this one handed over. Until then he’s your responsibility. If he moves, shoot him.”
“Yes, sir, lieutenant, sir.”
Don’s heart sank as he heard the star engine suddenly stop. Then it started again. If they stayed in the apple store all would be alright, but to exit would be to pass through the time portal. Thoughts of being stranded in the 1940s and branded as a spy for entering his own house fleeted through his head.
“I could make a deal with you,” Don growled, in the hope of attracting New York to his side.
“Outside, Philips,” Sergeant Borden said to one of the younger members of the guard.
The kid lowered his weapon – the expression on his face was deathly serious. “Serge,” he said and walked to the door.
From where Don huddled against the wall he was not able to see out as the door opened. Philips stopped. He stared for a few seconds and then slammed the door closed and backed up. The expression on his face was one of terror or absolute shock.
New York noticed the sudden change in the lad. He marched to the door and flung it open, his revolver at the ready. For a moment he stood staring blankly then he closed the door. He waited a few seconds then opened it again. His expression never changed. Slowly he closed the door and walked back to Donavon.
“So how did you do it?” he growled at Don.
“Do what?”
“You bastard,” New York growled through his teeth. He began eyeing the room as if looking for another door. “It has to be a bloody trick,” he said, feeling along the wall.
The situation had changed. Philips was wide-eyed and terrified. New York seemed to have lost his marbles as he continued to search the wall for some hidden object. A second soldier marched to the door and opened it. Don tried to manoeuvre himself to get a view at what was terrifying these people. The soldier snapped open the door and took up an aggressive stance with his weapon pointing out at an unknown enemy.
Don was fascinated by these strange antics. Had they all gone mad or something? Slowly, the soldier closed the door then, cradling his weapon in his arms, he leaned his back against the wall.
“It’s a goddamned trick,” he said.
“What?” shouted Don. “What, for crying out loud?”
New York sidled over to Don.
